The Merlin H Reed Crew was assigned to the 384th BG 546th BS on 18 October 1943, without a Navigator. 2LT Peter Gudyka joined the Reed Crew in December 1943.

On 9 March 1944 while on a mission to attack Berlin, Germany, their aircraft was struck by bombs falling from a B-17 above, and crashed with only two survivors. Original crewmember Robert Casey did not fly with this crew on that mission, and survived to complete his combat tour.
