Joseph G. Rachunas was assigned to Grafton Underwood in January 1943 with the 6th Service Squadron. He volunteered for flight status and flew his first of 24 combat missions in November 1943.

He was shot down on 13 April 1944 in B-17 42-38112 while flying as Tail Gunner with the Edward Fioretti Crew.
