The reason these two young B-17 gunners are smiling is because they have just participated in an effective job of wrecking a German air field in occupied France. The two, S/Sgt. Donald L. Engwer, ball turret gunner, left, and Sgt. William Harper, flexible gunner, recorded their 27th and 30th operational missions, respectively, with the penetration into France. Donald wears the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.
