Bonacker was a tail gunner, and as part of his duties, he would shine the ALDIS lamp (with a red lens, as seen in the photo) from the tail gunner position during takeoff in low-visibility conditions. This was intended as a safety measure to prevent following aircraft from overtaking the aircraft and colliding with it.

This genuine ALDIS lamp - with original case and filters - was purchased on eBay by Keith Ellefson, and is destined for a museum.
