Harry was shot down on the first 384th combat mission, 22 June 1943, and spent 22 months as a POW. He was one of the original crew members of the 384th. This photo at the 384th BG panel of the Counting the Cost Memorial Sculpture has Harry pointing to the first plane, symbolizing his part in the history of this group. The remainder of the 159 planes engraved on this panel represent all the 384th planes lost after Harry was shot down...

Harry was trying to climb out of his burning B-17 when it exploded and knocked him unconscious. He came to and opened his chute while falling thru the air, and sustained injuries on landing.
