Thomas Cooper Bates, navigator of the Howard A. Jung crew of the 544th Bomb Squad.

Pilot Howard A. Jung, Navigator Thomas Cooper Bates, Radio Operator William Isaac Sellars, and Engineer/Top Turret Gunner Harold L. Perry were killed on August 3, 1944. They were slow-timing new engines and crashed when unable to locate the runway after fog and darkness occurred. The only other crewman aboard, Co-pilot James Allan Vranna, was seriously wounded in the crash.

The picture was taken shortly before Bates went overseas.
