Emmet F Hardy, Tail Gunner of the Merlin H Reed Crew, 546th Bombardment Squadron, was assigned to the 384th Bombardment Group on 18 October 1943. He was killed in action on 9 March 1944 while on his 17th combat mission when his aircraft – the "SILVER DOLLAR" - was severely damaged by bombs falling from B-17s above it killing all but two aboard.
The photo shows Hardy by the waist gun position of an unidentified B-17. It was likely taken on the ground, and definitely not during a mission, due to the incomplete flight clothing worn, and the absence of the waist gun and ammunition. Location, whether stateside or at Grafton Underwood, is uncertain.
Photo contributed by Deanna Maker, Hardy's great-granddaughter.
