Robert Long crew with replacement pilot after Long, Fred Maki, and Jack Coleman Cook died in the crew’s ditching into the North Sea on February 3, 1945.
Standing, left to right: Pilot Philip Neldon Leavitt, Co-pilot Ralph John Vrana, and Navigator Edward Field.
Kneeling, left to right: Unidentified, Thomas Arnold Davis (TG), Unidentified, Howard Jasper (Mule) Oglesby (TT)
Leavitt – originally Co-pilot with the Raymond D. Cook crew - was the Long crew’s replacement pilot on their first mission after the ditching in the North Sea and continued to be their pilot until the end of the war.
Note: Ugly Duckling 2 was probably one of the 546th Bomb Squadron’s ships, although the name does not appear in the aircraft database.
