The caption on the reverse of this photo reads:
"The official designation for the troop-ferrying operations carried on between Istres Le Tube airport, near Marseilles, and Casablanca in North Africa, was the "Green Project". It was conducted by two heavy bombardment groups under the supervision of the 40th Bomb Wing of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. In the first month and a half, after the first troop-laden Boeing B-17 took off from Istres airport, over 20,000 passengers were carried. These included civilians as well as combat veterans from southern France. Here, redeployed vets are waving to pilot, F/O Richard S. Humphries of Watertown, N.Y., pilot of the Boeing B-17 "Eileen's Kindergarten", as they leave the plane after landing at Cazes Airfield in Casablanca, Morocco."
Note that the emblem on the pilot's hat is that of a Commissioned Officer of the U.S. Army, not that of a Flight Officer.
