I have attached another scan of the water color painting my father did as a POW of Ruthless going down in the English Channel.
The caption reads:
"The Flying Fortress Ruthless going down for her last time after completing her last mission on Oct. 4, 1943. She hit the water at 1:01 in the afternoon. She was coming back after her 19 successful mission, the last one was a tough one on Frankfurt on the Main. A propeller works was her target. Here is to another Queen that died proudly. She lead the groups first raid on enemy soil. I went down with it."
The 19 was written in by my father in the late 90's while he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's; I believe that number was 4 or 5 originally. From what I remember him telling me, he only flew 4 missions in that plane.
I have an old scrap book he kept as a POW with many interesting pages.
[Webmaster - current information indicates RUTHLESS flew 29 missions, one abortive.]
