From official government files.
The official designation for the troop-ferrying operations carried on between Istres Le Tube airport near Marseilles, and Casablanca in North Africa, was "The Green Project". It was conducted by two heavy bombardment `groups` under the supervision of the 40th Bomb Wing of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. In the first month and a half, after the first troop-laden Boeing B-17 took off from Istres airport, over 20,000 passengers were carried. These included civilians as well as combat veterans from southern France. Here, redeployed vets are waving to pilot, F/O Richard S. Humphries of Watertown, N.Y., pilot of the Boeing B-17 Eileen’s Kindergarten, as they leave the plane after landing at Cazes Airfield in Casablanca, Morocco.
