Grafton Underwood
Richard and June Denney inset in 1944 photo of the Denney children, left to right, Bert, Roy, and June Denney.
Richard is the son of Bert Denney and June's nephew.
I believe the 1944 photo, which I found in my father's wartime collection, was taken by pilot John (Jay) Buslee and given to my father, George Edwin Farrar who was the waist gunner on Buslee's crew, by Jay's father. Jay was killed in the mid-air collision in which my father, the only survivor, became a POW. My father lived with Jay's family for almost 4 years after the war. June Denney did not recognize a wartime photo of my father, but did recognize Jay Buslee in a photo I showed her. She recalled that Jay Buslee used to come to their family's house, the keeper's house on the base, for tea and a nip of wine.
The children's photo had no names written on the back, but Richard Denney recognized the children as his father, uncle, and aunt when I posted the photo to the group's Facebook page many years ago. I was delighted to meet the little girl in the photo and learn its story during my visit to Grafton Underwood.
