According to his memoir "Changing Trails Mountain to Con" Peterson mentioned that he had graduated high school in 1941 and worked on a ranch. He enrolled in Montana State College at Bozeman, Montana. His studies were punctuated by the attack on Pearl Harbor. Men of age 21 and older were required to register for the draft, so that did not affect him and many of his classmates. The following summer he got a job with the US Forest Service, during which the draft registration age was lowered to 18. Since he was working away from home at a remote Forest Service site, a Ranger came to their camp and registered all who qualified. That accounts for his contact address "Lubec Ranger Station."
