At first inspection, the tail number of this aircraft appears to be 43-38549.
The tail number is, in fact, 43-38548.
Per FORTLOG, B-17G 43-38548 and B-17G 43-38549 were assigned to the 381st Bomb Group in early September 1944. 43-38548 was subsequently transferred to the 384th Bomb Group in late September 1944.
A possible explanation for the odd appearance of the 8 at the end of the tail number is that a patch to repair flak damage was applied to that area at some point in her 50+ mission history prior to the date of this picture, 12 March 1945.
