The fine young officer receiving the Silver Star from Col. Ross Milton is 1st Lt Gene Goodrick (note spelling differs from that applied by the photo lab). On 30 November 1944, Goodrick completed his bombing attack, while a fierce fire burned just below the flight deck. After bomb release, he moved his aircraft away from the formation to avoid danger to the other aircraft, and after his crew had extinguished the fire, rejoined the formation for the return journey. He landed safely back at Grafton Underwood after dark, with hydraulic and electrical systems inoperative, a most skillful demonstration of airmanship and valor. Read his statement describing events aboard his aircraft during the mission on the Stories page of the 384th Bomb Group website: Mission To Zeitz.

Bletscher: "I had sent someone to copy the records, but unfortunately they were too big to be copied on a regular scanner. The Agency Chief at the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB, in Alabama, decided that they were records that should be preserved, and as a result had his department take care of them."
