Westlake was the original tail gunner on Cuddeback Crew. He was ordered to replace George D McCulley on the Way Crew the for mission to Hamburg, on 25 June 1943 in B-17F 42-30049 su*F "MISS DEAL." (This annotation per hand-written memo on back of original photo.)

Miss Deal and the Way Crew were shot down on the above noted mission; Westlake and 5 other crewmates became POWs as a result, while four were KIA.
