Simon Cortez Velasquez was assigned to the 384th Bomb Group, 547th Bomb Squadron from the 305th Bomb Group in March 1944.
He was shot down on 13 April 1944, his second combat mission with the group, and held as a Prisoner of War until liberation in May 1945.
