    Col Smith flew as Combat Flight Leader with the Stearns Crew in Rum Pott II, 42-31433 on 8 March 1944.

    The picture depicts an H2X plane 44-8047 (SO-Z) which suffered undercarriage failure in a landing accident after a non-operational flight on 19/10/44 at Stn106 with pilot Ralph B. Hicks at the controls. The plane was originally salvaged on 20/10/44 but must have been reclaimed from salvage later because it was assigned to 379th at the end of the war.

    The Squadron Code on the aircraft in the picture is BK*G. The Squadron Code for this aircraft in the 384th Aircraft Data Base is BK*Q.

    It looks like there was a collision between 42-38013 and the ship on the right. Note the bent sheet metal on the nose.
